Kumagai Yoshiyuki[熊谷義之] was born in Sendai. He was a craftsman employed by the Hosokawa clan of Higo province. He added his own ingenuity to the techniques of the Higo tradition, and was praised for his specialty in iron bases with floral patterns with gold and silver nunome (rubbed)-zogan[布目(摺付)象嵌] and was called Edo Higo[江戸肥後]. He lived in Yotsuya, Edo, during the late Edo period. This kozuka depicts Amaryu, scaleless dragon with the signature of Kumagai Yoshiyuki. One of the highlights is the unique four-character inscription (signature). It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon shinsa in August 2024.
